Dear Zealots is classic Amos Oz—fluid, rich, masterly, and perfectly timed for a world in which polarization and extremism are rising everywhere. The essays were written, Oz states, "first and foremost" for his grandchildren: they are a patient, learned telling of history, religion, and politics, to be thumbed through and studied, clung to even, as we march toward an uncertain future.
Too Many Unfamiliar Terms and Context Rather than get a cogent viewpoint from this book, I got a few scattered ideas. I think the problem is context since this is written from the Israeli view which I don’t understand. Especially in the second essay, there’s a good deal of vocabulary which I stumbled on due to the words being transliterations of what I take to be Hebrew words.I also found yet another definition of what right or left wing politics is. In the author’s view, right-wingers are belligerent warmongers where left-wingers are pacifistic idealists. He’s on the left. What was clear is his pessimism about Israel’s future. He repeats several times the prediction that the area now Israel and Palestine will someday be Arab from the sea to the Jordan. He, as a Jew, clearly wishes to not be in residence as a minority in his own land so he pushes the two-state solution. Two states sounds fine until you ask how the Jewish settlers in the conquered lands can be induced to give up their property seized from the Arabs since 1967.I suppose the thing I most enjoyed in the book was a new interpretation of the Abraham – Isaac sacrifice story. This one has concerned scholars for years yet the new take the author offers is both obvious and highly satisfying. In the end, the lack of context and understanding did me in. For example, do you know what Schulchan Aruch is? I haven’t a clue. Throw in dozens of similar terms and I think most non-Israeli readers will be left as baffled as I was at much of what’s here.His appetite for peace Every Oz book is wonderfull.A short, important read from a great writer A great writer - of fiction, memoir, and journalistic non-fiction and opinion - he will be missed. This brief collection of essays resounds with his views, consistent for decades, as a committed left-leaning, but not a pushover, Zionist. This books leaves with much to ponder and discuss about critically important issues and a strong statement against fanatical thought.
