Praise for Andrew Roberts and Leadership in War“Andrew Roberts provides lovely overviews of the careers of both Marshall and Eisenhower, among others. . . . [Leadership in War] has the enjoyable feel of a lively dinner table conversation with an opinionated guest.” —The New York Times Book Review“Roberts delves into the experiences of wartime leaders to produce lessons for heads of business. . . . illuminating . . . These portrayals were originally delivered as lectures by Roberts, a prolific historian of World War II and biographer of Napoleon and Churchill. The profiles of Napoleon and Dwight D. Eisenhower are the most salient for business readers, but it is not difficult to find insight in nearly all of them.” —Strategy+Business “Elegantly balances fact, thought and fresh, clear prose. . . . Roberts has set a high bar for future historians of mankind’s greatest bloodbath; Roberts splendidly weaves a human tragedy into a story of war’s remorseless statistics.” —The Wall Street Journal   “With his new book on the Second World War, Andrew Roberts has not only written the single best history of that conflict but has also claimed his place as one of our top historians.” —The Daily Beast   “Entertaining, even addictive . . . Roberts writes with great vigor, style, and fluency.” —The Sunday Times (London)   Andrew Roberts is the bestselling author of Churchill: Walking with Destiny; The Storm of War: A New History of the Second World War; Masters and Commanders: How Four Titans Won the War in the West, 1941-1945; Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Gamble; and Napoleon: A Life, winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for biography and a finalist for the Plutarch Award. He has won many other prizes, including the Wolfson History Prize and the British Army Military Book of the Year. A comparison of nine leaders who led their nations through the greatest wars the world has ever seen and whose unique strengths--and weaknesses--shaped the course of human history, from the bestselling, award-winning author of Churchill and Napoleon

Taking us from the French Revolution to the Cold War, Andrew Roberts presents a bracingly honest and deeply insightful look at nine major figures in modern history: Napoleon Bonaparte, Horatio Nelson, Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, George C. Marshall, Charles de Gaulle, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Margaret Thatcher.

Each of these leaders fundamentally shaped the outcome of the war in which their nation was embroiled. Is war leadership unique, or did these leaders have something in common, traits and techniques that transcend time and place and can be applied to the essential nature of conflict?

Meticulously researched and compellingly written, Leadership in War presents readers with fresh, complex portraits of leaders who approached war with different tactics and weapons, but with the common goal of success in the face of battle. Both inspiring and cautionary, these portraits offer important lessons on leadership in times of struggle, unease, and discord. With his trademark verve and incisive observation, Roberts reveals the qualities that doom even the most promising leaders to failure, as well as the traits that lead to victory.

Absolutely fascinating In reading Andrew Roberts’ fascinating book entitled “Leadership in War”, I was disappointed in one grievous error. He considers Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo due to Napoleon’s mistakes. The author lists many of Napoleon’s qualities but is astonished at how poorly his army fought contradicting many shrewd maneuvers of many previous battles. Although the author does remark on the fact that Napoleon was very ill and confined to his bed. Throughout the battle he was compelled to rely on the incompetence of his commanders despite his instructions given at his sick bed, the one factor that explains his defeat. At one point in the battle, Wellington was at the point of defeat but saved by the incompetence of Napoleon’s officers.Although the author set out the many factors involved, he almost ignored that one decisive factor that explained Napoleon’s defeat. Nevertheless, the author writes beautifully. The book is absolutely fascinating. What Makes a Great Wartime Leader? Each chapter of this book is superbly crafted. Professor Roberts writes about human motivations, which can be conflicting and difficult to discern. He does so clearly and concisely. He humanizes each leader, illustrating each one’s strengths and weaknesses, all the while extracting lessons for effective leadership in war.One thing that particularly struck me was the author’s theory as to why General Marshall did not waver on his insistence that a second front be created in northern France. I had never read this before. It is interesting to see historical dots connected in new ways. To find out what the theory is, buy the book.Brief and not very analytic This book gives a series of short summaries of the leadership styles of a number of major national war leaders, including Napoleon, Churchill, Hitler, and Stalin. I did not feel that I really got any new incites into the characters of the people profiled. The major fault, was that it did not contrast their characteristics with those of less successful leaders. This left me with the question of what was it that made these people successful at least for a time compared to other people. It also did not seem to me to adequately discuss some peoples failures. Napoleon for example was a great general and national leader, but he never mastered the art of making peace. He fought one war after another, until he eventually lost one. What was the flaw that kept him from creating something that lasted?
