Title: Antisemitism Pdf Here and Now
The award-winning author of The Eichmann Trial and Denial: Holocaust History on Trial gives us a penetrating and provocative analysis of the hate that will not die, focusing on its current, virulent incarnations on both the political right and left: from white supremacist demonstrators in Charlottesville, Virginia, to mainstream enablers of antisemitism such as Donald Trump and Jeremy Corbyn, to a gay pride march in Chicago that expelled a group of women for carrying a Star of David banner.

Over the last decade there has been a noticeable uptick in antisemitic rhetoric and incidents by left-wing groups targeting Jewish students and Jewish organizations on American college campuses. And the reemergence of the white nationalist movement in America, complete with Nazi slogans and imagery, has been reminiscent of the horrific fascist displays of the 1930s. Throughout Europe, Jews have been attacked by terrorists, and some have been murdered.

Where is all this hatred coming from? Is there any significant difference between left-wing and right-wing antisemitism? What role has the anti-Zionist movement played? And what can be done to combat the latest manifestations of an ancient hatred? In a series of letters to an imagined college student and imagined colleague, both of whom are perplexed by this resurgence, acclaimed historian Deborah Lipstadt gives us her own superbly reasoned, brilliantly argued, and certain to be controversial responses to these troubling questions.

A Seminal Work on the Subject of Antisemitism Now. Having taken a course on the history of antisemitism I found this book - Antisemitism Here and Now - filling what was lacking in my education: the here and now.I have friends on the left and the right, and from both I see a rise in antisemitic talk, so to those not versed on the subject her book comes at a good time.As to the complaint of contrived, concerning the dialogue throughout the book between two fictional persons and Lipstadt, I did not find it for the novice to the subject to be off-putting, in fact I found it needed, but to a person versed in the subject you could probably dispense with it.But who is this book mainly being written for? I hope the general public. To a person new to the subject more questions come to mind than have answers, as was in my case when first researching antisemitism, and so I find the dialogue needful. The dialogue focuses the questions many of us have in the back of our mind as we are exposed to antisemitism for the first time and want answers.Another reviewer, Gary Weiss writes, “What makes this book a potent weapon against antisemitism, in the same class as Gentleman's Agreement, is how it exposes antisemitism in a manner that is both expert and readily understandable by laypeople who perhaps haven't been following the issue too closely.” In this it is most surely a seminal work.Antisemitism: Here and Now - Highly Recommenced This is an important book. The significant increase in antisemitic actions and expressions internationally and in the United States is alarming to Jews and others worldwide. Deborah Lipstadt addresses in detail current incidents, as well as pertinent historical events, through a series of letters to one of her students at Emory University and to a colleague, who is a law professor. This format makes the discourse of a difficult topic, highly readable.A Modern-Day 'Gentleman's Agreement' In 1947, Laura Z. Hobson wrote the novel "Gentleman's Agreement," which told the story of a gentile writer who posed as a Jew to write a muckraking piece on antisemitism for a national magazine. The book was a runaway best-seller, was made into a movie starring Gregory Peck, and exposed Americans to the viciousness of antisemitism as it was then being practiced in America. What made the book and movie potent was that they described how antisemitism was practiced by decent people, including some Jews, who had unknowingly adopted antisemitic tropes.I'd put Deborah E. Lipstadt's book in that category, for it contains many of the same elements that made the Hobson book a seminal work on antisemitism. True, it is not fiction but is written as a series of letters. That makes it at once scholarly (it is scrupulously footnoted) and accessible at the same time. This is a nuanced book. For instance, the author notes that while the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement is antisemitic, its advocates are not necessarily antisemitic. She shreds the rhetorical device of citing Jewish heritage while advancing antisemitic tropes or the BDS movement, although she specifically decries use of the expression "self-hating Jew."For people who are familiar with antisemitism, much in this book is dismally familiar. What makes this book a potent weapon against antisemitism, in the same class as Gentleman's Agreement, is how it exposes antisemitism in a manner that is both expert and readily understandable by laypeople who perhaps haven't been following the issue too closely. One of this book's chief virtues is that it is politicaly even-handed, deals with antisemitism from the right and the left, and describes how opposition to Israeli policies is not antisemitism---although it can cross the line.
