I love John le Carré. I love his voice. I love his people. I love his nuance. I love his wisdom. I love his subtle humour. I love his moral outrage. I love his books.I loved this book too and was entirely gripped by it for as long as it took to read it. So, why not five whole stars? Well, it is a slighter book and while I understood the rather abrupt ending, it left me wanting more.Less involved with Tradecraft, more with social craft The storyline begins with two main characters meeting to competitively play badminton. Family or singles relationships are depicted. I found that this part of the story, with relatively little connection to spying was tedious. The best parts of this book do involve plans for high tech observation, actual connections or a surprise ending. There are characters worthy of greater involvement in the story, such as an older, beautiful Russian spy, but they are dropped. One main character, Ed Shannon, does comment on Trump and Brexit, but Americans who follow the news will be familiar with negative observations about this situation. Overall, I thought it was a decent read but I expected much more.Had this on pre-order & read from cover to cover in one day. Le Carre still on top form BUT the ending is very weak and disappointing. A little short too. Good but by no means his best work.
